Salt has an antiseptic effect... Salt water rinses are good because they alkalinize the mouth (opposite of acidify, which is what the bacteria create).

It is a good teeth cleanser. Those who cannot afford toothpaste are somewhat better off using common salt with finger to clean their teeth daily. It also effectively takes care of your bad breath if that is not due to any oral disease.
