Well, technically 1080p is better. However, it's a new and expensive technology and there's nothing being broadcast in 1080p at this point... everything is either 1080i or 720p. Unless you have a BluRay or HD-DVD player, you're not going to be able to take advantage of it right now.

Here's a good review of the two: http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-6449_7-6361600-1.html

Here's some info on each:

Technically everyone is correct 1080P is better than 1080I, that is P= Progressive which is a lot cleaner than 1080I.

But the only true signals that are 1080P are the signals that are coming out of the Blueray DVD player or the HD Dvd.

Currently the signals being broadcast in HD are only 1080I or 720P.

So unless you are going to spend money on a Blueray (which cost and ave $1200 or you can get a PS3 which is around $800) or you can get an HD system (for around $700 or bundle it with the Xbox 360), you will notice a BIG difference between 1080I and 1080P at the moment.

Technically 1080p is better but most people won't be able to see the difference anyway. To be able to see 1080p you must have HD signal and your tv must support this mode.

1080p

1080i is interlaced
1080p is progressive.

Progressive is better because of how the lines of resolution are displayed.
