It costs roughly $40,000 a year to pay the salary of the soldier who stand guard in front of it. The tomb brings in roughly $467,000 a year in tourist revenue, so the total cost is negative $427,000.

Let's see 2 soldiers from the 3rd ID's Old Guard guarding the Tomb in multiple shift 24 hour /365 days per year plus a cadre of NCOs and Officers since April 6, 1948...

Probably less than a single Pork Barrel Project slipped in the last years budget by the Congressman in you district. You want to save the taxpayer some $$$? Then review the federal budget, identify some project or unnecessary spending costing millions in you congressional district and demand your Representative have that money returned to the Treasury.

Guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a matter of HONOR....not a few dollars. Pork Barrel spending is about keeping some elected official in office...how honorable is that?

I don't know...but I doubt you have served in the military. That's fine...not every one is capable of sacrifice and serving their country. That would explain why you might ask this question. If you have served...thank you. But I would be a aloss to under stand why you would even ask instead of researching the answer yourself.

If your question was just curiosity...I stand corrected.

Which is it?

The guards are part of the Old Guard who protect the
Capital in case of attack. This is just one duty they have & the honor is sought after by many in military. My son has been put in for this honor after his deployment - he is not sure he wants to leave his men.

One soldier 24 hrs a day would roughly cost about $130,000 a year plus the training required 6-9 months per soldier. Every soldier in the Army's Infantry 3rd Regiment would be happy to guard it at no pay
