think of all through-out history and the millions of deaths and the continuing hardships caused strictly by religion, any religion, all religion. if religion in any form ceased to ever exist would the world be a better place. i think it would.

Your right.
Try a relationship with Jesus Christ. It's not a religion.

Religion is an institution to bring people together that is different than nationality. Where nationality deals with laws and numbers, religion focuses on the spiritual side to human beings. And everyone has a spiritual side--it can be found in nature or our favorite hobbies.
It's purpose is to try to explain the unexplainable--the questions that persistantly arise: Why are we here? How did we get here? What happens after we die?
Maybe you don't have those questions? Religions provide ceremonies that mark times in our lives worth remembering. Baptism can really be a glorified birthday party. Burying our dead gives us closure.

If you look at all the religions they all have the very basic and important attribute of human nature in common: love.
It is not religion that causes people hate but people who take it in their own hands and begin to make their own rules.
Like anything, in moderation religion is very healthy.

And it will be replaced by what...consumerism? individualism? nationalism? egotism?
Religion creates problems when it is exploited by extremists and power hungry people or when people follow it blindly and focus too much on dogma and damnation rather than on simple faith and principles.
Religion has done many good things in the past and instead of getting rid of it entirely and instead turning to new powers (some of which are already becoming dominant in our lives over religion) which bring us a new set of problems, perhaps we should just look at changing our approach to religion. decentralize the big organized religions, get rid of extremists, focus on the similarities between religions instead of differences and the the positive values instead of the threats of going against doctrine...you know, that sort of thing.
Though it is possible to have goodness and community in a fundamentally atheist society (I presume), I think it would be much easier and more beneficial to have a society of strong faith (for those inclined) but stronger free thinking where questions and growth are accepted more than blind belief (or disbelief).

So World War I and II were caused by religion? Vietnam? Iraq?

Abortion?
Racism?
Muggings?

All these are the faults of religions? It's easy to hide behind the athiest 'I don't believe anything' mantra and then blame the world's problems on everyone else isn't it? It seems to happen a lot.

P.S. Hitler was as Christian as carrot - we all know how much faith/belief a carrot has, don't we? Anyone who says Hitler was a Christian is really, really, digging to the bottom of the barrel.

I concur exactly. People tend to be attracted or migrate towards religions. That is the problem. People are trying everything under the sun to try to make their lives better other than trying the one true God that has made them in the first place. May God Bless

It's only bad people that use religion as an excuse. If people truly followed the teachings of their religion there would be real peace in the world.

I can't agree 100% with your premise. Although many things would be better in a world without religion you can't expect that everything would be OK. There would still be people doing bad things, there would still be sickness, and hatred... Eradicating religion won't solve everything, but it's a good start.

If you could find something to fill the void that most people would then feel. Also there would be a sense of belonging that would be missing for many even those that don't kill in the name of religion.

Actually, Christianity is the only religion I've ever heard of that caused all that, and the Muslims of course.
Pagans never did anything like that, so far as I know.

I agree. You'll get some people going on about Hitler (who was christian) and Mao (dictator who tried to ban religion - didn't work), but if there was never any religion to begin with? We probably never would have need the civil rights movement.

True, nearly every war in history has had some sort of religious background, with this I beleive they justify their war with religion or their religious affiliation.
