is it true that it eases the pain? if so, how exactly - I'd like a detailed explanation if anyone has one.

Yes. Not only does the fluid wash away topical residue of jellyfish venom, the ammonia and acids in urine cause a localized 'numbing'. It does not act as an anti-venom, but eases the pain temporarily.

From what I have read, it seems like it is an old wive's tale. In most cases you would actually want to use vinegar to help remove the jellyfish's tentacle. After it is removed you would want to use an ice pack.
If you use urine to remove the tentacle more stings will occur. After you remove the tentacle there has been no scientfic evidence that urine helps with the sting wounds.

Urine is pretty sanitary the first time it goes through your system. If you lack clean water and proper dressings it would definitely be an option to get the wound cleaned up.

BTW, don't listen to that poster above. You should NEVER use bleach on your skin. Especially an open wound.
