Most people will like to talk about themselves. So you can almost always start a conversation with even a stranger just by making a comment that shows interest in them or what they're doing. You can actually keep a conversation going a long time by just asking more questions, and you don't really need that much interesting to say yourself. If people see that you're interested in them, then they will usually start to consider you a friend.
