In Australia at Christmas time it is summer -- we have bushfires because of the heat.

Are you Indian? Why would you be asking questions about Christmas? I've read some of your answers and you hate Christians. You really have a foul mouth...

Heating systems are used in the cold weather, they can malfunction easily if not cleaned. Many people use their stoves more and leave things around them that will catch fire. Alos, during the christmas Season especially, the Christmas lights can short out and cause fires. Christmas trees must be kept watered or they will dry out and the lights can cause a fire if they short out.

It is sad that these things happen, so take all the precausions you can to keep things safe!

Space heaters fall over. Appliances/christmas lights malfunction and overheat. People forget food left cooking on the stove. Someone falls asleep with a cigarrette in their mouth. A lit candle gets knock over. A child plays with a lighter or matches. Someone wants to recreate a Victorian Christmas using real lighted candles on the tree and the tree catches fire.

And the news media is all over it for the traditional yanking of the heartstrings.

I believe it is because in the northern hemisphere Christmas occurs in the winter. It is cold in the winter and people need to heat their houses. most houses are heated by some form of fire or flame. Fire or flame in the presence of paper wrappings around all those presents some time results in fire where it should not be ( namely under the Christmas tree.)

Because it's around that time of year that people are overloading electrical sockets and using old extension cords and lights. Put these items with a drying pine tree and voila......the roof is on fire.
