Have you ever called 911 with a real emergency and then they start saying that the addres your giving them is fake and that your call is a prank. This happened to me once where my friend had been shot at by a BB gun and the BB's went into his arm. His mom drove him to the hospital and his dad stayed with me and he called 911 to report what had happened. When he called 911 he reached the police department of a nearby town who transfered him to a department of another nearby town that said the intersection we were at didn't exist. We were transfered by them over and over and arguing with them for 10 minutes and then they hung up on us! We called back and did the whole thing over again for another ten minutes until they got us to our towns police department and they finally came. What if someone had been critically injured or something very serious!?

The problem is so many dispatchers get stupid prank calls. I'm sorry this happened to you. It's our policy at our agency to treat every call like it was real b/c you never know. Even if it sounds crazy, we send em out. You can try requesting the tapes (911 is always recorded and becomes public knowledge) and filing a complaint with all of the agencies involved. If you don't, someone some day really will be in a critical condition and it may be you.

The 911 system suck's here too. I live near Detroit. A while ago this 5 or 6 year old kid called 911 because his mom passed out. The operator yelled at him and told him he shouldn't play on the phone. The kid called back 2 or three times in over the next few hours. Each time the lady yelled at him. Finally after SIX HOURS the cops came to the house. By this point the boys mother was dead of a simple heart attack an hour prior to the police getting there. The police and doctors said had she had the proper medical attention, she most likely would have not died.
The 911 operator got fired, but what about that boy. He know has to live the rest of his life without his mother, plus he has the memories of watching her die.

The 911 system need's some real work.

The only thing I can say is know who you are calling and you're in the proper jurisdiction. If the operator tells you there is no such address, politely tell them what city you are and the best address you can give be it cross streets or a physicall address. They are equipped to route you properly. If you stay calm.
I wish everyone who has complaints about the 911 systems all over the country could just spend 1 shift sitting next to a dispatcher so you can understand what a critical job it it.
So many folks judge without having walked the perverbial in anothers shoes.

What you can do is go to the police department that hung up on you and request to talk to the supervisor. You can explain why you are concerned about the incident that occured (i.e. if this was a real emergency, etc.). If they did not do anything wrong, the supervisor will explain why those actions were taking place. If the dispatchers did do something against protocol, the appropriate actions will take place.

haven't had that happen myself but did happen to a friends father of mine. He was walking home from work and got mugged and beat up. called the police on his cell (which they didn't take) and the dispatcher told him that the area he was wasn't a real address (this was in las vegas not a small town). I mean it happens all the time look at the stories you hear of children calling to report their parents are being hurt, injured, or dead and they tell the children to quit playing on the phone. To me it is disgusting. Don't know which is worse calling for no help or being put on hold

you were using a cell phone "right?"

If you are using a cell phone you have to make sure you are talking to the right city 911, sometimes call the operator and tell them you need so and so 911.

If possible, always call 911 from the home phone, it is tracable by the 911 operator
