Nothing. The credit reporting agencies ("CRAs") collect the information and then sell the information to creditors who are evaluating applicants. Of course, the CRAs also sell consumers their own reports (other than the one free one per year) and the growth market is selling consumers regular reports so the consumer can make the information the CRAs are reporting about them is accurate. In essence, they are selling the consumers protection against -- the CRAs from screwing up their credit reports! Can you imagine the CRAs make money first selling information about you and then make extra money by having you pay them to make sure what they report is accurate. The CRAs also make money by selling info about you to companies who want to market their products.
