puppies were born 11/28. I just treated the mom with a capstar pill. Will this be excreted in her milk to help the pups? All info I've found says pups need to be 4 wks old to treat. I can't have fleas in my house for 3 weeks!! Help!!

I know that the capstar is safe for the mother...i've done my research...i just need to know if anybody knows of anything on the market for newborn pups..or something i can give the mother that will be excreted in her milk..i am leery of using chemicals on her since the pups eyes and ears haven't opened yet...

For the love of your pups, call the vet. Don't do ANYTHING until you talk to the vet or vet tech. Honestly, while the home remedies may be great for dogs, puppies are sensitive at a week old. No one is trying to steer you wrong, but just talk to your vet in the morning.

well you could try bathing them in Skin So Soft from Avon. I've done this to my kittens that were not yet old enough for any kind of treatment. what it does is smothers the fleas and then repels them for a while so that you can spray and vacumme like the other guy said. If the mother starts to clean them after the bath it wouldn't hurt her either. Also I would suggest calling the vet, most of the ones around here don't mind answering such questions as long as they are not busy. hope you find something that works..oh yeah the medication you give the mother should say whether or not it is safe for nursing mothers

The capstar gets into the blood and it could find its way into the milk. Anything that is in the blood is in the milk. Treat the mother dog with Frontline or Advantage. That will kill all the fleas where she lays and it will help protect the puppies, since they come near her to nurse. Frontline and Advantage have products that kill the fleas on the dog, flea eggs and flea larva in the environment, whereever the dog lays. Treat the Mom and protect the pups. They are still small enough to get a big bang for one buck. The frontline or Advantage will cost you about $10.00 at the vets. They have Frontline at some pet shops.

I would suggest calling your local veterinarian. They are usually very informative and willing to give advice over the phone. There is also shampoos made for small dogs and puppies that have the age range on the bottle... Go to a pet store and check them out.

If you don't want to call your local vet, I would go to this site and just ask your question. You will get an answer from experts in the field.
