American thought has been shaped by more than just books, but since you asked about books here are some that influenced American thought and are still commonly quoted today:
1. Civil Disobediance by Henry David Thoreau
2. On Liberty by John Stuart Mill
3. 1984 by George Orwell
4. Beyond Freedom and Dignity by B.F. Skinner
5. The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith
6. Human Understanding by John Locke
7. Cybernetics by Norbert Wiener
8. The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis
9. Catch 22 by Joseph Heller
10. The Interpretation of Dreams by Sigmund Freud

There are so many other books that heavily influenced both American history and culture, but this is a good start. Believe it or not, almost none of our books are about Iran, or about the clash or western culture and Islam. Most of us Americans would probably have a hard time even finding Iran on a map. I am sure that this is in stark contrast to the amount of media in Iran condemning the US, as I have found immense amounts of anti-us literature in my travels abroad. Anyway good luck to you.

It would be hard to find one book that describes our country. We are a nation that is a kaleidoscope of cultures. We are the worlds oldest democracy but still are unsure of ourselves in regards to 'older' nations.

We are the nation that dropped two nuclear bombs on Japan - then immediately turned around and started a massive food aid program to ensure that every person in that nation had enough food to eat.

We are a nation that is constantly arguing and bickering among ourselves - but let an 'outsider' attack us and we act as brothers.

We are isolationists who generally just wish the world will leave us alone - but we are also the world's foremost traders that require global presence to protect our interests.

We hold grudges - but are the most loyal allies a nation can have.

Our soldiers have fought everywhere in the world - and the only territory we ask for is enough land to bury our dead.

We are your best friend or your most fearsome enemy.

After reading the answers you can see why we will probably never have peace on this world. Also Americans remember the 88 hostages and the present news films " death to America".

i in my opinion comprehend Iranian individuals that are no longer able to return to Iran out of outrage of being prosecuted for no longer following the regulation of the Koran. some powerful books: "The distant places coverage of Self-pastime: a ethical ideal for u . s . of america" with the aid of Peter Schwartz "Atlas Shrugged" with the aid of Ayn Rand "Ominous Parallels" with the aid of Leonard Peikoff

Iran must want their freedom more than their lives. I hope to God we don't fight for every country on the planet who doesn't like their government...HECK, there are times I don't like MY government.

America was won by stealing all the land and working the land with slave labor. Not very glorious or respectable.

All people of the world are alike, we are just trying to live life, feed our family, have a roof over the head, and have some joy. It's the power hungry men in the government who ruin it for everyone...each country.
