Ask your son what is his aversion to socks. Maybe he doesn't like something around his ankles. If that is the case, there are Ultra No Show socks at WalMart. They are very thin and lightweight. He will barely know that he has them on. The problem that I have with the no socks in sneakers issue is that his feet will no doubt sweat in the shoe. When it does there is nothing to prevent the constant soaking and build up of bacteria in the shoe...fungus, etc. Socks do seem to aid in prevention of that.

Ask him. He may just not like them but there is a reason why. You can get him to wear socks, but he may not like it. When it is cold, he needs to wear them just to add another layer to his feet to prevent frostbite.

A little one can't be expected to know that his little toes will turn blue when they are too cold...and they will turn numb when too cold becomes too much. Most kids just keep playing and won't know there is a problem until they get inside again.

Make him wear the socks!

I wouldn't worry about it. Wearing sneakers with out socks in 40'F weather is not too cold to wear sneakers without socks. I am 34 right now, and I also hated wearing socks and still do. Let your son wear his sneakers without socks. I don't think his feet will get cold, because his feet are used to the cold. I see kids today wear sneakers without socks in this weather, and I do not have a problem with it, even though I am not a parent. I do not know the age of your son, but kids of all ages wear sneakers withtout socks to school, whether they are 16 or 6 years old. During my school days, I hardly wore socks, and never had frostbite, and my feet never froze or got cold.

It is not a problem, and it will not hurt him at all.

Want to hear something crazy? His feet are probably warmer without the socks! See, cotton retains moisture, and the cold causes moisture to freeze, causing the feet to get cold. Most figure skaters and hockey players skate bare foot (or in nylon socks) for this reason. It is actually warmer for them. Anyone that tells you it will hurt him is just going with the "norm".

Personally, I hate wearing shoes without socks, but everyone has a personal preference. I think it is very wonderful that you respect your son enough to allow him to make a choice like that and are willing to go along with it.

Long and short - it will not hurt him. If his feet get cold, I guarantee you, he will be wanting to put on a pair of socks.

When I was in Jr High, it was the fashion to wear sneakers w/o socks. I never had any problem with cold feet. I did end up having to wear socks to because my feet and sneakers started smelling really foul.

I went through this very same problem. My son didn't like socks and would always try to sneak out without them. One day, I asked him why... turns out he has a problem with the way cotton feels on his feet. I took him out sock shopping and he chose some socks that didn't feel gross to him. He's been wearing them ever since. The ones he likes are a nylon blend that would drive me crazy if I wore them.

And what are you thinking wearing socks will prevent other than "frostbite" which won't happen until the tempratures get much lower. One can not catch a cold from not wearing socks OR shoes for that matter in the winter. Colds are viruses which are airborne when someone coughs or sneezes not from not wearing socks or shoes when it's cold outside.

no it's not okay, I'm a grown women and I hate socks! I love wearing flats and low heels, I just can't stand to wear confining shoes. Tell him he better get use to it, plus the socks you have both him might be irritating him. Socks should wrap around the feet comfortably, but in some cheap socks they bundle up around the pinky and I just can't stand it, make sure his sock don't have anything that socks shouldn't have.

As a parent you have to choose your battles. Save your energy for the things that are really important to you. I wouldn't choose to fight this one; as long as he's not uncomfortable I wouldn't push him to wear socks. My brother went all through high school without socks (a style choice) and the only thing that happened was that his feet and shoes totally reeked all of the time. My mom made him leave his shoes on the basement steps and made him wash his feet in the tub as soon as he got home from school every day.

I don't see it being a serious problem How old is your son? I am 25 and a mother of 2 and I personally don't like socks either. I don't wear them unless I really need to for something.

Wearing socks on your feet is like wearing a hat on your head. You MUST protect your extremities.
