Since she's a kid, don't bother "fessin' up" about it. Make up a really good story. That will help her get over it much more easily.
I had the same thing happen to me (only I stepped on it) and I told my girl I took it to the doctor because it was sick. Of course, she wanted to see it so I would give her reports about how it was doing for a couple of weeks.
I found a kitten that looked pretty close. I told her that since the kitty had been sick, it was a little different. When I brought it home, she noticed it was different but figured it was because it had been sick.
It bothered me to lie to her, but I figured I'd deal with THAT guilt rather than let my little angel deal with grief. It just wasn't worth it to do the "right thing."
She forgot and has loved the now grown cat for sometime.
Good luck.

Listen, you freaked out after your hit the kitten, because you didn't have a second to think before your child came to the door. You did what comes natural to most parents, you tried to protect your child. I believe that there is such a thing as being too honest with young children. People tend to give children more information than they can handle. Don't go into an elaborate lie either, that's just insane. Tell the child the cat must have run off, that sometimes sad things happen, then plan to take her to pick out another one this weekend. Sorry this happened, I know how you must have been sweating when this happened and your baby came to the door!

Tell her the truth (maybe not that you did it) but that she died. This is an oppotunity for you to teach her a hard lesson in life and you'll need to give her time to heal/grieve like anyone else. Then maybe in a month get her a new kitten/puppy. But not one that looks just like the dead one! So many people make that mistake. Kids know! How you treat this is very important. Talk to your wife about the best way to tell your daughter. You can do this.

0_0 You ran over the kitten ...
Why is the kitten left roaming around in the driveway, anyway?! If you can't take care of your pets, don't get any!
You could do 1 of 2 things:
1- Fess up to your daughter that you ran over her kitten. In this case, it's too late to give the kitten a proper burial and give your daughter closure, since you dumped it (cruel). She may resent you for it and be mad for a while, but who wouldn't be? She'll eventually get over it and move on to another kitten.
2 - Let your daughter believe that the kitten ran away. You may want to let your wife in on what REALLY happened. Otherwise, she may end up getting suspicious and you'll have to hold all that guilt to yourself.
Again, your daughter will eventually get over it and move on to another kitten.
... be more careful, PLEASE! And don't go dumping bodies on the freeway. That's beyond heartless.

Explain that the kitty didn't see the car and you didn't see it. Make sure she understands that you are TRULY sorry for what happened and that by taking the animal away instead of owning up to what was obviously an accident you were wrong. If that were a person instead of a cat and you left like that you would have been thrown in jail. Go back and retrieve the cat (put it in a box or something). Have a funeral service of sorts to show her that you understand how important the animal was to her. Don't expect her to forgive you right away.

At this point I would get her another:
But first just tell her you think it ran away sometimes kitty's do that. But if the kitty does not return in a few days we will get another one for you. Hug her and next time try to make sure you do not hit it... :( sorry for that situation. Normally I always tell the truth but this is sad.
o.k. i'm torn go 1/2 and 1/2 tell her it passed away. But not that you hit it, and get a box put something in it (preferably the real kitty) and tape it up and bury it in the yard or somewhere special so she can remember it and visit. Little girls can take this hard!

Just let her think that the cat ran away or had to go back or something. Get her another one soon. Don't feel bad. Things like this happen. Hope the rest of your day went better.

You tell her the kitten ran away then you take her to the pet store or the ASPCA and let her pick out another one. Make it like you are rewarding her for being such a good little girl. She will think that it is such a treat. Good luck.
