YES. You don't know what cats carry in from outside. Never let them near babies and young children.

No is not necessarily "harmful" the wives tail is that they may steal your babies breath - when in all actuality it is that they are trying to cuddle with or lick the milk from your babies mouth. Some cats will try to sleep with the baby so you should always make sure you do know where the kitty is. You may have troubles with your cats after bringing home the new baby out of jealousy. For example, they may start not using the litter box, they may urinate in the babies crib or other places in the house. I personally have never had any troubles with my cats and I have five children. Bring a blanket to the hospital or take one of the blankets that you have used with the baby and give it to the kitties so they can become familiar with the baby. Show them the new baby when it comes home. They can all live in harmony.
