The dog is asserting its dominance over this "puppy" you've brought into his domain. The dog needs to learn that it is not the pack leader, but the humans are, and that includes your daughter. Not to be mean of course, but to really tune into the pack mentality that dogs have. The dog is unhappy, and he will be a happier dog when he knows his place.
If you get the National Geographic channel, I suggest watching episodes of the Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan. He is a genius at getting dogs to understand their place.
Here is the blog page for the show and there is a list of all of the shows. I am almost positive he has covered a situation like this in one of the shows, and maybe the site can help: http://blogs5.nationalgeographic.com/channel/blog/dogwhisperer/
Cesar always does this "shush" thing when dogs are doing undesirable things. So hopefully you can get the situation rectified with as little emotional turmoil as possible!

When someone steps in and makes the dog stop. The dog should not be allowed to bark at your daughter.

Pro'bly jealous. You should becareful not to let your daughter get too close to the dog without your supervision though. All animals have their wild instinct, that is to attack or bite. When your daughter gets older then it could be better for you to teach your daughter how to play with the doggie then.

He may want to play and he may be really jealous. I would keep an eye on him around her. Don't know much about schnauzer's nature, but he might bite her.

Some dogs do not like children, thats why they say to keep cats and dogs away from babys. Just keep him/her away, she'll/he'll get used to the fact that she/he's got to share you.

Your mom's dog is ill trained and is thinking it is above your child.
Just another reason I think dogs are annoying and nothing but hassle.
