The most promising natural substance for helping to reduce longevity of cold and flu viruses is elderberry extract. Multiple studies show it shortens the duration of the flu significantly and may help with colds. It is a natural anti-viral (and also has significant anti-oxidant properties).

If you purchased standard capsules, you'd take a couple of them every eight hours or so. It does not directly reduce symptoms, but may inhibit multiplication/replication of the virus, thereby shortening duration of illness. It has to be taken with food to be absorbed from the gut.

Vitamin C, and echinacea and goldenseal are taken by some to help support/boost the immune system during colds and flu. There's a limited amount of scientific data supporting the idea that these three substances help to boost the immune system during illness. Echinacea and goldenseal extract should not be taken for more than two weeks, and in reasonable dosages. Again, these have to be taken with food.

Vitamin C is usually considered to be safe even in the multi-gram range with no side effects. Many people take a couple grams plus of Vitamin C daily in a few divided dosages. Because it is water soluble and excreted, it's best to split up the dosing and take it every six hours or so. Vitamin C can be absorbed on an empty stomach or with food.

I'm pretty sure that you can't overdose on vitamin C so I would take a lot of that and also try echinacea(purple cone flower extract),pill form I find is the best way to go. Also stay away from cold foods they have the opposite affect on your body than you are looking for. Warm foods will help your blood circulation which in turn gets your central nervous system working harder which then gives your immune system a boost. I think.

You can overuse Vitamin C, because if you eat too many supplements your body passes out almost all of it, so it's better to take about 2 500 mg pills a day. That will keep you going but it won't be too much.
