BRITISH ARMY ANSWER
Yes all branches of the military have to pass several fitness tests a year after training.
The Basic Combat Fitness Test involves a 1 1/2 mile run in under 10.5 minutes for guys or 14 minutes for girls. Then you have to do as many push-ups and as many sit-ups as you can manage in 2 minutes. Guys must do at least 44 and 50 respectively and girls must do 25 and 50 respectively.
Depending upon the unit there are other fitness tests such as assault courses, Advanced Combat Fitness Test, march and shoot.....the list goes on. As your career progresses (and your age) the requirements for passing tests reduce, again dependent upon your Corps.
If you're looking for advice on a career in the army post a comment with those questions and I'll answer them as best I can.
Good luck.

I was in the U.S. Army from 1991 to 1995 and the answer is "YES!" From Basic to your permanant duty station you will do PT almost every day, depending on what kind of unit you are in. You are required to pass a APFT, every 6 months if I am not mistaken. They may have changed the rules since I got out. We ran at least 2 miles 5 days a week. Once a month we had a Battalion or Post Run where we ran 6 miles. Those were the days! Hoorah!
I know absolutely nothing about the British Army. Sorry :-(

last time I did a basic fitness test (an annual requirement) it was to run 1 1/2 miles as a squad in 14mins followed immediately by a further 1 1/2 miles individual run in 10.5 mins or less. This is performed in PT kit.

Short Answer...Yes
Long answer...from the day you arrive at bootcamp you will do PT everyday. When you leave bootcamp and arrive at AIT you will do PT 5 days a week. When you arrive at your first duty station you will do PT 5 days a week as well, any job in the army. Depending on the unit, it is only 1 hour long, from 0630 to 0730.

Yes. There is a basic level of fitness that must be maintained. Even if (like me) you work in communications, that is your secondary job. Your primary job, even though you may not be called to actually do it, is to be a soldier. The level of fitness must be maintained so that you can do your primary role, should you be called to do it.

the short answer is yes, even though you may be desk bound and not in the infantry, you may be posted to a frontline at any time in your tour of duty, therefore you have to be physically fit at all times, this is done through routine P.T. and drill sessions.

You bet. Three days a week the company will get together for exercise, usually running, pushups & situps. In the Army everyone needs to be physically fit to do everything.

You do but generally you can get away with doing as much or as little as you want, depending on were your posted and what rank you are. A BFT is to be done annually...1.5 miler, as many sit ups and press ups in two minutes.
