We have national holidays, but everyone cannot celebrate them at the same time. People in hospitals and nursing homes need care, the doctor simply can't say, I'll sew you up tomorrow, or I'll deliver your baby tomorrow, today's a holiday.

Well, I'll tell you. If you think that Everone needs to have Christams off, you might want to reconsider. Now consider the following situation. Say a woman is pregnant, & is about 8 1/2 months along. Now say she goes into Labor on Christmas but all the hospitals are closed. And she might die if no treatment is givin. What would happen to the people that get in car crashes on the holidays, or Sundays for that matter.
What would happen to those people if the Hospitals closed durring the holidays? When you can answer me that. Then you will be able to answer your own question.
Hope this helps.

I am flabbergasted I always assumed America was like every other country of the west in that regard. You have no idea how stunned I am because I read everything about U.S. history and politics. In Canada we are lagging behind Europe with about ten paid holidays a year. Emergency workers are paid double for the day they work and the take a Lou day in the future. Lets see if I can name them; 1/2 Christmas eve, Christmas day, boxing day, 1/2 new years eve, New years day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Victoria day,First Monday in June, first Monday in July, first Monday in August,Labour day, Thanksgiving. That's it for government mandated paid holidays. however most decent companies will pay for the time between Christmas and new years. Some throw in the first Fridays of June, July and August that way employees get these 4 day mini vacations.

We are a free country, we would not be if the goverment forced private companies to close there businesses. We already have the days you listed off, except to Election Day. But, even that is protected by the tax payers, your company HAS to let you take time to vote if you want.
Not only would your suggestion take away our constitutional right to work it sounds like hell! Can you imagine DIsneyland during those 2 weeks? GADS! Living Hell!
2 weeks vacation is the standard minimum here in the US too, we just spread it out. That makes room for us all in the vacation spots and allows business to operate.

What has the United States been constant with in the past. Hell laws are changed daily for adaptation. In the U.S. if you are working, which a lot aren't, you are happy for whatever day you can get off with pay. Individual companies do have 2 week closures in the summer, plus those who work for the different government and city agencies have more than enough time off, but then again most government or city agencies don't do squat when they are at work. It is a catch 22 situation. Personally, I am all for holiday.

If we had a national healthcare plan, like many European countries, this would probably work. The same thing that makes America great is also the same thing that hurts sometimes.
It's every man for himself.
An employee making minimun wage with no benefits pretty much needs to work as many days as possible. Those people do not get PAID holidays.
I was in that position about 6 years ago. Single mom of three. No child support and not on welfare. I needed every ounce of work and overtime that I could get. Or we didn't eat!

I have a friend from England who was telling me that everyone gets a paid vacation of 4-6 weeks, but these vacations are not taken at the same time. What he described to me sounded great. It would be nice if the United States would have this policy...plus socialized Medicine.

It is called capitalism. Who would pay for these forced holidays?
It is hard for small business to pay for basic holidays. Most large companies have more than 5 holidays, but to force is government control where none is needed. Maybe this is why we are the wealthiest country - the government does not control private enterprise in the USA.

No, I wouldn't support it, It's unnecessary regulation of private business to require that they close on certain days. If the market demands that they stay open on holidays, then they have a business obligation to do so.
Sure, it's a drag working on the holidays, but some business owners feel the need to stay open. They're their businesses - they can open them when they want.
