My husband is in a great deal of pain as the cartlidge in his hip is worn and bone is moving on bone. He is exercising as instructed by both doctor and chiropractor and is taking prescribed pain killers. I have been told that there is a gel that can be injected between the joints that acts like a cartlidge. Does anyone know about this?

The gel is not cortisone which is a steroid. It is called hylan which are derivatives of hyaluronan, the healthy component of synovial fluid which lubricates our joints. The process of injecting hylan is called viscosupplementation and it is claimed to delay surgery for 1-2 years. Unfortunately, this thing works well in knees only. Haven't come across the procedure being used in hips. If some have had success with the hip joint, then that's good for your husband.

Lynda is close. Cortisone is used in trigger point injections. This works for a couple of weeks to months. What you are talking about is a gel which is a silicone which is used to replace the cartilage which is gone. This is very new but they are having good success so far. Look up Back Institute on your computer and you will find a site that does this. I believe it also shows how it is done with just a couple of holes instead of being cut open. I hope this will work for him pain is a horrible thing and then not being able to move on top of it.God Bless him.
