You should phone the Metro airport, the airline you plan to fly, or TSA, the Transportation Security Agency. Unfortunately, the rules and the enforcement of them is different at different airports.
However, I think you can take your tower on the plane as long as it is small enough to fit under the seat in front of you or in the over head bin. My tower is too large for that. I think I would take the Harddrive out and carry that on the plane and put the tower in my luggage with clothing packed around it to cushion it.
The harddrive is the most delicate part and so is the most likely to get damaged.

xray machines will not ruin it, i've ran my laptop thru one the other day with no problems. However, you want to consider size and being careful to carry it around with you and bumping it against things because it is not as durable as a laptop would be. I doubt it would fit in overhead storage, OR under a seat unless its mATX form factor. I think size will make this a big no. It will have to go with the rest of your baggage, OR SHIP IT and insure it, that would be safer if any damage would ever come to it. That'd be my best bet. Your only hope is if its a small tower, and if you do have one, be VERY careful! You can ruin hard drives very easily by bumpin things around.

Checked luggage. I don't think security will be keen on your CPU being in your carry on. If you are going to bring it, pack it carefully in your checked luggage as the baggage folks will be throwing it around.
I'd invest in a laptop if I were you. If you are a frequent business traveler.

The x-ray machine won't ruin a PC. Make sur eyou pack it very well though, you could mark it fragile but I sometimes think they view that as a challenge.
