My little JRT/Beagle mix likes to clean everything. It's absolutely disgusting. He will clean the eye boogers from our Labs face, he'll clean out her ears, he licks hands, his paws and legs, his rear end...I know, I know, dogs clean themselves and they like the taste of salt on our skin, but eye boogers and ear gunk? What could he possibly find that tastes good there?

Anyone else have a dog that does this?

I think it may be a submissive trait. The more alpha dog will rely on the lesser dogs to gain affection, etc. Your dog is just being affectionate. Dogs are icky gross loveable things aren't they?

My two girls don't interact like this, they just mouth each other in play until the Chi has enough, then she'll put her muzzle around my JRT's muzzle (as best she can) and growl a bit to say.. enough!

Dogs are funny though.

My one yr old female corgi does this...she is so loving and caring. One day she will make an excellent mommy. She even would try to help me when I would clean the wounds on one of the dogs and right now she is so interested in the pups in the whelping room. She is constantly by that door waiting for it to open and watching through the cracks. When I cry she is right there up by my face like shes saying its ok I'm here. I think this is a wonderful trait to have in a dog. I dont find it gross at all.

He sounds like a very loving dog. My dogs lick each others ears. But I have seen some dogs that are OCD and will lick themselves sore. If this is the case you should see the vet. If not just be happy you have such a loving dog.

I have several that do this.

Actually, in my house it seems to be the higher ranked dogs that do the "cleaning". Like a mother insisting on cleaning her pups. Rosie will go up to her subordinates and clean their eyes and faces, there's nothing submissive about her attitude.

while i bypass on walks with my dogs, she stops and sniffs each and each piece of poop she comes for the time of. this is only what canines do. She's in no way tried to consume poop, besides the fact that it particularly is somewhat demanding attempting to take her for a walk and having to offer up each 4 ft by way of fact there's a clean piece of poo.

Uh .yeah........ALL dogs do.

Lower ranking dogs generally do more "grooming".
