The police call them Head covers, hoods, masks, or sometimes they are referred to as Swat rags!!

The mask is mainly used to protect the officers identity. Many major busts require rough treatment of dirtbags, due to them being well armed and fortified. So, in my opinion, if I was one of those cops with a mask my reasoning would be that I would not want to be recongized on my day off with my kids by some dirtbag who might want revenge, for something he did.

The mask do cover the officers id and makes them seem intimidating, yet possibly the main obligatory reason a tactical officer will positioned on a nomex hood while in complete equipment is that this is flame retardant and could shield his face and neck from the outcomes of "flash bang" "stun-grenades", "noise-flash distraction instruments", (despite the locals call them) that are many times deployed to disorient suspects while making dynamic tactical get right of entry to such as in the time of a raid.
