A "shelter dog" without question. Both of my last two came from shelters, and I couldn't have found better dogs. It almost seems like shelter dogs know what they are being saved from and are eternally grateful to you. Both of mine were mutts, but since I don't care about breeds, that's fine. One thing though... if you adopt a purebred from a shelter, and want to breed it, check your state laws. Here in Indiana, if you adopt a shelter dog, you MUST get it fixed. I think that this is a great law, personally, seeing as how full the shelters are.
Adopt a friend who needs a home, you won't regret it.

As to where to adopt a dog? I would go to a dog rescue, without a doubt. There are so many animals in the world that are put to sleep because nobody wants them and their owners mistreated them. It is very sad. Also, if you get a dog from a rescue the staff has usually got into depth with vacanations, shots, and spaying/neutering so that is all taken care of.

For what purpose? Well, a rescue treates the animals much nicer, and saves them from the shelters.

I love both. I have a dg from a breeder/kennel and one from a rescue, and I love them both. I think rescues seem to be more loyal and more about their owner, because their life has been bettered by that person...

Absolutely a dog rescue, please save someone who does not already have a home. No sense in encouraging breeding since we already have so many unwanted dogs.... I have had 4 animals all from shelters and they have all been darlings. Plus Mutts are healthier than purebreeds!!!
