Absolutely. I am on SSDI and SSI, and Medi-care. My manic depression began as post-partum depression. I live in CA. It took me 2 months, from beginning to end to receive my benefits. You do NOT collect more than 1 year retroactive payments. If you have kids, they will qualify for SSI, which is welfare from the Feds. You will NOT qualify for food stamps. You will qualify for low income housing. You do NOT need an attorney. If you have a good psychiatrist, the proper diagnosis, and the documentation that Social Security requires, then there should be no problem. You can also work, and still collect benefits. Don't let uninformed people deter you from getting the right information. Contact Social Security and ask your Doctor to help you.

I have heard that Bipolar Disorder is reason for disability, but don't know. I broke my back, THEN was diagnosed with BP, and I was denied the first time. When I re-applied, I had OCD, anxiety disorder, PTSD to add to it, and I got it. Disability is not the easiest to prove, as it shouldn't be. But when a person works all of their life and pays into SS, then it should be there when it is truly needed. I"ll get off the band wagon right now. HA

Yes, bipolar is a disorder that can render a person disabled, and yes you can get SSD/SSI. It can be hard, expect to be denied your first try. Get a lawyer, they will help youwiththe red tape. If you are denied the first time, keep reapplying. oNce you are finally approved, your payments are retroactive fromt he FIRST applications. For example, you applied 10 yrs ago for the first time, and you are finally approved now. Your first check would be a retroactive check for ten years. Also SSD/SSI is a federal program, it has nothing to do with state to state guidelines. There are other programs you may become eligible for in your state that you wouldnt in other states, but disability in and of itself is a federal thing. Hope that helps!

There are two kinds of disability coverage. One is through private insurance (like your group benefits plan) The other is through Social Security Disability. You can go to the Social Security website (ssa.gov) and find out what you need to qualify. They have very clear guidelines about bipolar disability. If you are eligible for benefits AND meet the requirements, you should be able to get disability. Try to do it by yourself first, because a lawyer will take a lot of YOUR money for himself.

If you have private disability insurance, it is usually easier to qualify for benefits than through social security, but the benefit period is usually limited. (In other words, if they do pay you, they will probably pay for no longer than two years)

To be honest you will probably be denied at first. But don't get disappointed most people are. You can appeal that decision- and it is also helpful if you get a lawyer that deals with disability-- for example: Binder & Binder- that is all they do.

Be prepared to have a doctor also say you are unable to work because of this disorder.

I believe depression is considered something you can collect disability for so I would say so. You would need to be followed by a doctor and most likely a psychiatrist to sign the forms etc. I assume you are being followed by someone so they would most likely know.

That's what I got mine on. I had a lawyer from day 1..was turned down 3 times and finally got it..It will take what seems like forever but if you have med. documentation that says you can't work..you will get it..go to a lawyer that specializes in disability..you only pay if you get it and they won't take your case if they don't think you can win..

I sure hope not. Bipolar is another scam foisted on us by drug companies and the sheep doctors that get kickbacks. Psycho Babble. Grow up, get a life and quit pissing and moaning about an imaginary disability.
