2 months salary is the guideline .. so anywhere from $2000 - $4000 is what that would tell you but if your guy has a normal everyday job like the rest of us ... anywhere from $1500 to $3000 would buy a nice ring.

There's no real average. Diamond companies like to advertise "four months salary lasts forever," but let me tell you: almost nobody actually spends four months salary to buy an engagement ring.
You can buy them very cheaply - a few hundred dollars, or even less if you don't mind not having a diamond - but most cost around $500 to $5,000 depending on the stone. A single large diamond will cost much more than several smaller ones; a nice choice if she has small fingers is an anniversary ring, which has three to seven smaller diamonds.
There are VERY NICE rings for under $1,000, and unless you are totally set on a ring, I'd go with that. Most women will prefer you spend money on memories together - vacations, presents, RENT, rather than on a single ring.
I paid around $1,500 for the one I bought my wife, and it draws a lot of compliments.

What you can reasonable afford. Do NOT go into debt for this. It is not uncommon for a lady to have a small rock early in the marriage and upgrade as fiances become available.
I have found beautiful engagement rings for $500 - $1000. Reasonable diamonds that are clear to the eye. Personally I don't like jewelry stores. The mark up is at least 50-75%
Link to a on-line site I have had good luck with.

Not every has the same budget for an engagement ring and this is the first thing you should be looking at - what can you afford.
Take her with you and tell her what your budget is - this way she will know that you are comfortable talking with her about these sorts of things. Choose a ring together - it's a great moment and then get down on one knee and ask her to marry you - every girl dreams of that moment, then pop the ring on her finger.

The tradition is 3-4 months salary...but I say whatever looks nice on your hand and you are happy with. I am petite so if my guy got me some big goddy stone it would look ridiculous. Hopefully your guy knows your taste well enough to pick out something nice for you. You don't want him to go into debt over a rock but you want a nice ring. There are all kinds of rings out there in all price ranges.

depends on how much money he has. really it's just a material item. the price of the ring doesn't equal the amount of love you have. my engagement ring was about 600 it wasn't huge but it wasn't tiny either.

They should spend what they can reasonably afford and not a penny more than that. I don't know what the average range would be but mine was about 800 (I knew exactly what I wanted and made him wait til the store had a sale! lol)
