Earth quakes can happen anywhere in the World. They very in intensity from place to place. Along the plate boundaries (one lies right along the western U.S.) is where the most intense earth quakes occur. On the eastern side of the u.s. The closest plate boundary is in the middle of the ocean, or on the other side of the U.S. The most damaging earthquakes usually occur in California becasue of the Plate boundary right below. They occur because of a little thing called subduction, or when one plate slips under another. The plates eventually build up enough energy that the plates let go and the energy bursts, reulting in an earthquake I hope this information helps!

Quakes occur most often in areas with active volcanoes (Kilauea, Mt St Helens), followed by active faults. Areas where quakes do not occur frequently are the ones that are most likely to have extremely powerful earthquakes, such as the New Madrid fault that occurs along part of the Mississippi River.
