Looking for the best site to post pictures for public viewing...

I have been trying to find a good site where I can post a number of pictures under several albums/galleries. For example, Gallery 1, then if possible a sub category of each Gallery. But then I would also like to be able to post personal photos as well that might need a password to access (optional).

Also, it would be even more of a bonus if the pictures could be purchased and I can receive compensation from this.

One of the sites I am going to test is smugmug. I have heard of many others, but haven’t looked at them - Fotopic, Zenfolio, Pbase, ImageEvent, Zoto. I noticed that the premium subscription of smugmug will also put a watermark on the pics.

Storage space, ease of use/upload, simple for others to access, perhaps have access to add comments, and lower cost are important factors.

Let me know if you have any recommendations why you would recommend this - have any experience/option on smugmug??

Thanks!

I like pBase at pbase.com quite a bit. They have multiple levels of galleries, locking and unlocking, easy storage, good chat boards, and advice.

I like that I can either block comments, allow them, or allow only pbase users to comment. The price is minimal and the storage is great. I have been a member now (and bought others membership) for about 3 years.

And no, I do not get a kickback from them. I just think they run a good site.

flickr flickr flickr!

Been there for just under a year now and have got more feedback and more constructive crit's in that time than I did in 4 years on devART.
You can buy stuff through flickr, photo books look really good for b&w or sepia tones.

Quote from flickr's FAQ:

Here's what you'll get with a Pro Account:

* 2 GB monthly upload limit
* Unlimited storage
* Unlimited bandwidth
* Unlimited photosets
* Permanent archiving of high-resolution original images
* The ability to replace a photo
* Ad-free browsing and sharing

Compare that to what you get with a Free Account:

* 20 MB monthly upload limit
* 3 photosets
* Photostream views limited to the 200 most recent images
* Storage of smaller (resized) images

The pro account costs you $24.95 US a year... cheap even in Australian dollars ;)

Uploading couldn't be easier, click on "upload picture" select which pic you want to upload and hit "upload". After it's uploaded you can give it a name, a description and tags. Ta da.. it's on your user page!

Everyone can comment on everything.. and if you don't like what someone's said on your photo you can delete it :)

Flickr!

It's a super community of people. You can either take it very seriously or not that seriously. The key is to join some groups and then post your photos to them.

Also, you can learn a ton just by looking at other people's amazing pictures.

The same account you use here for Yahoo! Answers will work for a free account on Flickr.

I love www.zoto.com.
It is very easy to use, easy to resize, and can fit about 2000 pictures (8MP) on the free version.

I like multiply.com, or deviantart. I'm not sure if they allow purchases or if they can give you compensation, though.
For private pics, in Multiply.com, you can set them so that only friends/people in your network can view them.
