A 6 year old can get into trouble even when a parent is home. It's a difficult situation for a 12 yr. old to look after a 6 yr. old. and the 12 yr. old would be responsible for the child for more than just a few hours (even if the 6 yr. old was sleeping, the 12 yr. old would have to be alert for them waking)

When I was a young teenager, I had to babysit for my younger sisters all the time and it caused a lot of problems. For a 12 year old, not having supervision for such long periods of time can cause problems because it's a lot of freedom as well as a lot of responsibility for that age.

Legal age is generally between 11 and 12, but that isn't for a child babysitting a younger sibling. I can't find the rules for that for your state.

There's a very good article here on how to prepare kids for looking after themselves.

okay what the authorities don't know won't hurt.
if the 12 year old is mature then you should be fine. i would be careful if they tend to fight a lot.
also if you have caller id tell them to answer only when certain numbers come up

when i was younger someone who called the house, called the police when they found out me and my brother were home alone. the cop let it go when he came.
