I had to write a term paper discussing wether Communism should be more of a political system or a religion. As a result, I answered that it was more of a political issue because it controls the lifestyle of people and the economics. But later on...I realized that I was wrong. It could also be considered as a religion. Communism states that there is no God and good is only made from human hands. Mao who was one of the communist revolutionnary killed more or less 1000 monks. Communism was a strong belief. They believed that there was no god. They also did rituals such as reciting stuff about antigods, Marxism. Soo far, what is a religion? religion does not only imply an existence of god. In my opinion, a religion is made from a strong belief into something, contains many followers, and rituals. What do you think? What i want is opinions and not anecdotes from holy book plz.

I just took communism like that as an example. but there is alot more to consider. Buddhism does not have a god, same as Taoism/Daoism. As for Communism when you guys say it's violence, i think that all religions has it's dark side....

I have degree in Sociology, so I can tell you that's a pretty innacurate way of portraying Marxism and Communism. In fact there is a difference between them because Marxist Communism was never and has never been experienced in the world, whereas political Communism of Stalin has.

You say that they make rituals that recite that are anti-god, and none of that is in any way related to either Marxism or Communism. As principle Marxism does adopt a stance that is anti-religion, not necessarily anti-god.

I do agree, however, that communism is like a religon because it spreads like a virus of the mind that is intolerable to other points of view regardless of their factuality or validity, but the term "religion" is usually meant for spiritual things that require devine revelation. Therefore, saying that communism is not a religion though it acts and encompasses methods and mentality of such. Don't use equivocation as means of an argument.

Wikipedia has a lot of info about the definition of Religion and how it came to be: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religion

In my opinion, Religion is a construct of man - a system of spiritual advice and guidance to help us understand the world around and to help us live happy and productive lives. I think of Communism as a political system - but once it defines a god and starts talking spirituality, does that make it a religion? Hitler's plan was to correct evolution by doing god's work to eliminate weakness and flaws in humanity - does that make Nazi-ism a religion? Maybe it does.

How about the person who does the Sunday paper crosswords or watches their favorite program on TV "religiously"? Or those who have made football into a religion - as I have heard people say. Perhaps religion is merely rigidly following certain steps as a way of life - because there are many of us who are deeply spiritual, and yet have no affiliation with any organized religion. Because we are out side an organization our rituals perhaps don't adhere to a strict schedule - does that make us not religious? It's all very interesting, isn't it?

Peace!

Try this, man has been trying to govern peoples efficiently, and one of the largest problems is the distribution of wealth. A group of wealthy people and many in poverty does not go well, eventually the lower class overthrows them. Communism is a method of preventing an elite group of people having all the wealth, it is distributed equally. This struggle will hit america really hard soon. Communism evolves into a religion when a few in power decide to use Dogma to coerce the views of the people. Attaching religion to control people (inserting Dogma) works well for influencing religious people.
The best papers on this topic cover distribution of wealth, and how much tax should be paid by the upper class to help the lower class (socialism).
The extremes a political process will go to to create harmony (invent and force a religion) repressing other religions

Communism says nothing of the sort. It's an economic system, not a religion. Many communistic societies have also tried to suppress religion as a way to further control the populace, but there's no reason for communism to be linked with atheism. Most atheists are not communists, and do not want to suppress religion - just better educate the populace so we can grow out of some of our more restricting superstitions.

well, like most things, the word religion has several meanings, all related

Belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe.
A personal or institutionalized system grounded in such belief and worship.
The life or condition of a person in a religious order.
A set of beliefs, values, and practices based on the teachings of a spiritual leader.
A cause, principle, or activity pursued with zeal or conscientious devotion.

so the last one,, would be what you are talking about,,,, and yes things other then belief or following God, can be practiced as a religion,,,,,

There is a lot of confusion about communism. Marx said that under communism, the state disappears, along with political parties. So any communist party is not communist, just socialist, which is supposedly a transition to communism.

In contrast, Jesus was a true communist: "Blessed are the poor, but woe to the rich." (Luke 6). Also remember what Jesus instructed the religious man: "Sell all that you own and give the money to the poor." (Luke 18). As for his lifestyle, we know that he traveled around a lot in his very few years of work. But he did not travel alone; he had several groups with him: the 12 disciples or apostles; a retinue of women that followed him about (and no doubt some had children); his mother and brothers and sisters were frequently with him; and another retinue of "disciples" who at one point is counted as 70. Over a hundred people followed Jesus around. ... All of this was therefore evidently organized and even by modern terms should be recognized as quite an impressive operation. ... The point is: All shared and shared alike.

Perhaps it is not absolutely clear, but in the case of the early church it is so stated. After Jesus' death, his original disciples form the early church. Now we find that all property and wealth was handled in a communal (communist) fashion.

"The church of believers were of one heart and soul, and none claimed anything as belonging to himself, all property was common property. ... There was not one needy among them, because those who owned land or houses sold them and brought the monies to the apostles, and they would distribute it to whoever had a need." (Acts 4).

This is only my "opinion." And I am sure you know all the the things said about opinions.

Anyway, I think the notion of "God" is very personal and subjective. Each of us has some idea that we are "small and without much power" and there is something greater than ourselves. And this is what I think most of us call "God!"

The "Universe" we live in is a massive and marvelous place! And we all struggle to try to understand all we can about this magnificent thing called the "Universe."

If you have the chance and the time do a Google on "Deep Space" you will find incredible information about our Universe and even who we are.

I wish you well and great adventure in your search for truth!!!

I am most often "Speechless by Cottonbelly" when I look outside myself!!!!

The problem is that religion implies a belief in the divine, so comunism can't be a religion. It CAN be a philosophy, which is more accurate.

Secular humanism actually has it's own church, but in that it denies the existence of a god, it can only be a philosophy that has some religious characteristics.

There may be newer definitions of "religion", but in the classical sense, religion implies belief in some higher power.
