Sheriffs are responsible for county law enforcement. Police covers anything, as does the word "cops." Some people see any law enforcement officer of any kind or any branch as a cop, period.
Police also means different things in different cultures.

We are all Law Enforcement Officers...the only difference is that Sheriff's jurisdiction is usually the county and Cops aka Police are usually municipal.

'Cop' is not an official term anywhere. There are a number of theories about how the term came about, but none actually claim it was any more official than an unofficial abbreviation. Police usually refers to local law enforcement. Sheriff is usually county law enforcement.

In Ontario Canada, police and "cops" are the same thing. In Canada most provinces have municipal police, provincial police, national police (RCMP) and a national intelligence agency (CSIS).
The sheriffs we have here only deal with civil matters like seizing property as a result of bankruptcies and evicting tenants. They don't wear uniforms and are not armed. They don't have powers of arrest and will call police for help if someone is giving them a hard time.

Somewhat!...cops is a slang word for all law enforcement officers! All the terms of Police, Sheriff, Highway Patrol, Agents of
ATF, FBI are basically all called slang names such as Cops!..The
difference in them is the enforcement of societies laws which are
regionally enforced under their respective jurisdictions.,City, State
and federal.

Every jurisdiction has its own executive power, most also with their own enforcement officers of some type. Dog catcher, city police, county sheriffs, state police, FBI, ATF, NATO, UN. Usually the larger the jurisdiction the better trained and paid the officers are. Would you risk your life for $7.50 per hour?

Cop is slang. It's short for Copper, wich was the material that was used for badges in the early 20th century in NY.
Police is too general a term, and can apply to any type of law enforcement officer.
Sherrif is usually voted into office, and his underlings are deputies.
Hope this helps
