He works in mysterious ways...just kidding!
It's a creation myth like any other. You may notice that the Genesis creation myth has much in common with the creation myths of other ancient Pagan religions.

God set up light to get things going and then added the sun to keep it going. The stars are for the prehistoric system of watching the seasons. They also tell the Gospel story(See Chuck Missler , D. James Kennedy,or Dr. Gene Scott)and yes we need photosynthesis. And no the stars were perverted for astrology.

The answer is in Gen 1:14, as a marker for time. The sun and moon for years and months, and the stars for longer periods like the zodiacal ages (~2000 years) as dictated by Earth's wobble upon its axis. Also stars help create light when the moon is not out at night.
Genesis 1
14 And God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth." And it was so. 16 God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.

So you are saying the sun does not exist? God created the sun so that man would have a way of having night and day, a time to work and a time to sleep.

You have to pardon some of the rude and immature behavior on this site, I really wonder why people come to the religion site when they don't believe in religion, but to your question, my husband has been researching the bible and he thinks, that the first light was meant to be Jesus, cannot prove it but, Later in the bible it says that Jesus is the light of the world. Hope I have been of some help God bless

Your argument only applies to a linear timeline. What if time is not linear?
And yes, perhaps it's just someones imaginative hypothesis of how the world came into being.

Do you honestly expect those who believe that the Genesis story is truth to suddenly experience some illuminating moment upon reading your post that makes them want to change their minds completely?... and even if they did... do you expect them to admit that they are experiencing any cognitive dissonance?
How is this type of loaded question any better or different from what some of the Christian folk post on YA?
By the way...when he created light...that was the Sun, hon...

Do you believe if there's a light in your heart? If you believe that, than you'll know the answer.

Or perhaps God can do things your puny mind can't grasp, much less for reasons your puny mind can't grasp. Just because you are incapable of understanding something, it hardly means it didn't happen.
