I own a rival crockpot (the original maker of crockpots) 5qt with removable insert. I would suggest buying a crockpot with a removable crock insert, at least 4 quart-size, that' big enough for most pieces of meat, etc. THe removable insert allows it to be removed and cleaned without worrying about accidentally immersing the heating element.

I think they're all very similar. I have a Procter- Silex that I like a lot. Just make sure the crock is removable (most of them are these days) and I like the oval ones. It makes it easier to pour things into it and to transfer things from a skillet. You should use one!! Other than seafood, I think it's the best way to cook any type of meat. Eight hours on low and it just falls off the bone.

Rival. It's the Rolls Royce of crock pots!
