Lesbian Pride Redhead - I wasn't pointing only to Hispanics, although most of Illegals in the US are Hispanic.
Wnk - I'm a bilingual American and I know many others. So you're saying only Americans need to learn another language? Does that seem right??
Siervocal - maybe you don't fully understand the illegal immigration problem in the US
Elodie - see my response to Wnk.
Dinodino - your employer should care if you know the language or not.

Yes, I think so. A person who lives and works in a country should have a stake in that country. Should be there legally, pay taxes, and at least make an effort to communicate in the language of the country they are in.

Yes, if you live in a country you should have a good grasp of the language, but there is no wand that magically teachers people another language upon crossing national lines. Do you really think anyone intends to live, work, and worship surrounded by people speaking a language they haven't the slightest of intentions to learn?
Immigrants of the past learned English and so will today's immigrants. quit crying!
You should really be more concerned with learning Chinese, anyway. They'll be kicking our, as well as the rest of the world's @ss pretty soon. Go China!

It seems right to me too and I also would do the same if I had accepted a job overseas. I have been to many countries in the 4 years I was in the military and couldn't help but feel like a moron when I would be in town trying to buy something or asking for directions and only knowing one or two words. I'm by no means racist, but I think that it is something that should be required in the states to get a job.

Yes, for work and cultural reasons.
Knowing the language will definitely help you assimilate quickly with your colleagues. Another advantage is that people will warm up faster when they see that you are making an effort to better communicate with them

Hey I'm pro immigration, but I totally agree with you. You can't get a decent job if you can't speak the language.

Actually, many people in foriegn countries who deal with American businessmen must learn to speak English.
Many Europeans and Asians are bilingual; it's just Americans that can't figure out how to speak another language.

If you went to Germany to pick cabbage they wouldn't care if you spoke English or not.
If you wanted a good job, yes, but you would never get an EC work permit as an american.

Absolutely, but that should be a requirement if they want to come here. However, I am personally opposed to any further immigration from anywhere in the foreseeable future.

I agree. I am seriously considering leaving this country and am studying the language of the country where I am planning to relocate.
