A friend just bought a used car two weeks ago, and is now sitting on the side of the road. Can he demand a refund? Is he SOL? Does anyone know?

SOL, unless there was a warranty.

I sold cars for a while, and it depends on what state he lives in, and if he got it from a dealer or not. Although he probably can't return it, some states do have a 'used car' lemon law of sorts. Depending on what the problem is, if it was something obvious that a dealership should have discovered prior to the sale, or discovered and covered up, he may have some legal recourse as far as getting it repaired. Then again, some states have a two-piece used car policy: If the car breaks into two pieces when you drive it off the lot, you get to keep both pieces.

Used cars are almost always sold AS IS and when you find yourself broke down on the side of the road, your SOL.

This is the kicker...since your friend is still under contract for the car he will still be required to make the payments on the vehicles no matter if it's sitting in his garage or at the tow yard.
