An acid is H+. They come from such things as H2NO3 (nitric acid). An H+ will break of giving an acid. The opposite would be a base OH-. They come from compounds like NaOH(sodium hydroxide). The OH- will break off giving a base. If you put an acid and base together you get water H+ & OH- = H2O.

if you're talking about chemistry, it would be alkaline, if you're talking about flavours, it would be either sweet or bitter.
