Wouldn't it be wonderful if there were a medicine that would keep you from getting sick. The medicines from the pharmacy and store actually don't prevent you from getting sick, they don't even make you better. They just make you feel slightly better until your own body can make you well. It doesn't matter what you wear or don't wear, that also just makes you feel more comfortable- and it's sensible to wear jackets and socks to stay warm in cold weather.
A sore throat is a dry throat. To help it drinks loads of liquids, but not dairy products because they make the mucous feel thicker and you get tempted to clear your throat or cough to bring it up. Cold drinks are usually best, but a warm drink can soothe as well. Honey in the tea sometimes helps the throat hold the moisture a little, makes it taste better too. Your nose is probably a bit runny or stuffy at night, and you are opening your mouth to breath in your sleep, giving you the dry sore throat come morning. If you can sleep more upright to help things drain, or if you can use a vaporizor to add moisture to the air of your room, that will help. Much as you want to avoid medicine, it has it's uses. A medication at night to help you breath easier would be sensible, as a good nights sleep can do you more good than all the other potions and pills in the world. If you positively can't afford to be sick and miss school, and you actually do get a cold, then medication to help control the symptoms when you can't be home is the only route left. Other than that, rest, fluids and hot broth soups are your best aids. You can take Tylenol or Motrin for the muscle aches, and soak in a hot tub of water at home. A steamy shower will help with a stuffy nose. The aloe infused tissues are worth the expense while you have to blow constantly, they will prevent a chapped nose and lips.
Otherwise, you will have to avoid the contagious folks as best you can. Wash your hands and be careful to keep them away from your face as much as humanely possible. That's about all you can do to stay healthy, except take a flu shot if you haven't already. Sorry, but even moms catch colds and there isn't any magic elixer to prevent it. Moms just make you feel better because they can put love in their medicine, and love is the one ingredient that's not for sale and can't be bottled.
