Put the garbage can into a cabinet under the sink.

I have heard a mean story about a chawawa dog gettign into a garbage can and trown away into the garbage shoot accidentaly. It never came near the trash can again. I don't suggest you do it, but tell your dog this story, he will learn not to do it.

I used to spray ammonia at the base of the trash this has worked for me

place small balloons around the edge of the can (tape them). When the dog hits them with his paws they will pop startling the dog. Your dog will stay away from the trash

spank it with a rolled up newspaper each time it gets into the garbage can. If it runs away before you can do it, lead your dog back to the garbage area, tell him "NO" firmly and spank him with the newspaper.

i keep mine under the kitchen cabinet so the cats cant get in it.. but try obedience training, every time he gets near it tell him NO! and shoo him away.. when he leaves it give him a treat.
