Interesting question. He is currently considered a heretic by most Muslims as far as main stream Islam is concerned, he has abandoned the faith and has his own outrageous interpretation of Islam that does not conform with the real spirit of Islam. Of course there are a few who consider him a hero who managed to give the states a nice big smack on the face. Those who appreciate him do so not because of religion, but because he was able to do the unthinkable. He was able to hurt the big, bad thug.
I honestly do not think his image will change much in 20 or 30 years. Most will consider him an outlaw, some will consider him a hero.
