My friend pulled himself out the military as he disbelieved the war after 18 months of service in Iraq. He saw how patrioc soldiers and innocent Iraqis got killed because of Bush's

But now he is recalled and will report to army in Jan and will be sent to Iraq again. He's ok to go there to help rebuild the country but is more concerned that the war may expand to other countries, and again, for the purpose of Bush's own political and family benefit.

He wanted to refuse to go back, but if so he'll be put in jail and it's a disgrace for him also.

Is there a way not to go but still keep his honor?

I feel for him. Unfortunately when a person join the military, he/she becomes an asset to an organization, and is not allowed to have choice.

I understand it's not that "demoncratic", on the contrary it's almost like communistic. But that's what military needs - no free thinking, otherwise the troop will be in greater danger.

Yes. there are processes he can follow to become a Conscientious objector even after joining and receive an honorable discharge, or he could go AWOL, which if done for a cause is not without Honor. Honor is not defined as taking orders- it is defined as doing what you believe is right no matter what the consequences, then taking whatever may come your way as a result. That's true Honor.

I would have your friend read the story of Sgt. Ricky Clousing, who found himself in the same situation.

When you sign up for the military, you agree to do whatever those in charge say.

I'd say your friend is screwed.

You go where you're told.

It's as simple as that.

edit: I disagree with you SpringSnow. FORTUNATELY those that join do not have a say, as our military would then be a complete joke.
