PLEASE do not buy ANY pup from a pet store. Pet store pups come from disreputable breeders, always. No responsible breeder would EVER have one of their pups in a pet store. Most pups in pet stores come straight from puppy mills. The very few that come from smaller facilities will positively have parents who were not given any health checks for inherited diseases. And who knows what sort of temperament the parents have?
Also, pups from pet stores are almost always difficult to housebreak, as they spent the first several weeks of their lives living in their own excrement. They don't know you aren't supposed to poop where you play/sleep. They also will not have spent sufficient time with their mother and siblings, so their bite inhibition won't be any good...meaning you will have a very hard time teaching the pup to not bite you.
And there are many, many more problems with pet store pups.
As to Alaskan Malamutes...
There are multiple breeders on the West Coast, including many in California. There are also a lot of Rescue dogs in that area, waiting for homes. Wonderful dogs who, for the most part, lost their homes because the people who got them had no clue what to expect with this fairly unique breed.
Have you done your research into this breed? Do you know of all the possible/likely negative traits they have? Like howling, shedding, digging, disobeying, breaking out of the yard, high prey drive (they will KILL other small animals), dog aggression, etc.? If you are willing to put up with all this, here's a link where you can start a search for an addition to your family. It is for the Alaskan Malamute Club of America.
http://www.alaskanmalamute.org/amca/index.asp
In addition to finding breeders, there are also links on this site to Rescue groups around the country. And there are many, many other important pages on this site, including a list of some of the problems I described above about the breed and things you should look for in a breeder.
Good luck!

NEVER BUY FROM A PETSTORE!!!!!
Petstores get puppies from puppy mills. Puppy mills keep breeding dogs in small cages with little human contact and the dogs are abused horribly. If you buy from a petstore you are advocating animal abuse, and you shouldn't own an a dog.
If you'd like to get a dog from a breeder, go to the AKC website or try the alaskan malamute dogs of america club, or something like that.
Good luck!

well i am from Michigan and can't really help you, but i do have two Alaskan malamutes that i might breed. I just want to let you know that they are great pets and if you raise them to love you and others, they will. Both are wonderful cuddly teddy bears who definatley love the cold temperatures in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Great choice on a best bud!
I also recommend obedience school for them.
Sorry i can't help,
a yooper from da UP
