First of all, you need to know what type of an infection. Infections can be caused by different types of organisms. ex. Bacteria, Viruses, Fungus.... Antibiotics only work for bacterial infections. Different bacterial infections also respond to different antibiotics. All this will be analyzed at the doctor's office and they will write you a prescription for what ever infection you have. Antibiotics will not work for viral infections. Also if you take antibiotics but you didn't really need to, you can possibly develop resistant bacteria that will not respond to any type of medication and can be dangerous. So be cautious and talk to a medical professional before you take any medication.

Depending on if the infection is bacterial or viral! If the infection is bacterial then yes they are good! But if you are prescribed antibiotics you must take them all as directed by the doc- the reason being is that the weaker bacteria will die faster from the antibiotics but the stronger more virulent ones will need the whole course of medicine to get rid of them. Now if you stop taking the medicine, let's say when you start feeling better but you still have meds left, the stronger bacteria will have been exposed to the antibiotics and it will make them even stronger and harder to get rid of, and in turn requiring another course of a different antibiotic(most likely more expensive as well)!! Lesson in my ramblings--take all of your antibiotics!!!

Depends whether the infection is viral or bacterial .... antibotics do zip for a viral infection eg. colds/flu .... treatment for these type infections is usually bed-rest / fluids etc..
