People are so obsessed with giving and reciving gifts that they forgot that this was the day Jesus was born, they are so wrapped up in their own thing that they just forget about the true meaning of Christmas.

Looking at the answers you've gotten so far, it seems to me that Christmas is what you make of it.
For centuries, most of the world accepted Christmas as the time to celebrate the birth of the Savior. Businesses closed, families got together to celebrate, charities were in evidence as no other time of the year, armies called cease fire for this one day to honor the Son of God. The Spirit of God was abroad in the world...
It's only been recently that there has been so much controversy over it. It seems as if it has become a fad to question all things religious lately...but I believe it will soon pass.

to us it still is. I make sure that my son does not ask for anything around this time of year and remember that it is about the birth of Jesus. Then we bake goods for people and hand them out. We do buy gifts, but not as many as the average family, I don't want my son getting used to receiving gifts for the celebration of our Father.
Maybe I'm cheesy, but I like him to know what the real meaning of Christmas is

Well actually it was originally it was several pagan end of year festivals ~ Saturnalia, Yule, Equinox, Solstice, etc.

Then Christianity moved in and stuck their holiday on the 25th, apparently to allow pagans switching to Christianity the ability to celebrate year end still but ultimately to monopolise the holiday season.

Anyway, all that's in the past. Then the world learnt about commercialism and supply & demand. Basically, the act of gift giving commercialises itself. If enough people need gifts then they need to come from somewhere. Advertising naturally comes into it as people need to know where to buy gifts from.

I'm sorry but it's not just Christmas, it's just the way the western world is. Look up "supply & demand" and you'll see what I mean.

No, it used to be about Mithras and the winter solstice. Then it was hijacked by Christians. Recently, it has been secularized, which is a good thing.

These days, most of the traditions are secular. These include the decorations and trimmings, peace on Earth, goodwill towards men, remembering the poor, remembering family, celebrating life continuing through winter.

It also has been heavily commercialized, but so has Christianity, itself.

Commercialism. Capitalism. Love of the almighty dollar.

The act of giving is supposed to represent the gifts that were presented to Christ at his birth by the Wise Men. To give without the expectation of return is the foundation of Christianity...CHARITY...which unfortunately in many of the modern translations of the Bible has been replaced by the word "love". True charity is expressing the true love of Christ in our everyday lives.

And contrary to popular answers here, Christmas is NOT Pegan. It is celebrated near the Winter Solstace because the King of England was Pegan and told the Christians that they could celebrate at the same time Pegans celebrated. This is the ONLY reason we celebrate the birth of Christ in December. It was not "changed" by any church, but moved by man.

Actually it used to be about roman pegan gods but then the church changed it.

Everything changes, just remember that things are what you make them, so if Christmas is about Jesus for you then let it be so and it will, just stop worrying about what others are concerned about as far as holidays are concerned.

It is called xmas now. It is the proper name, because it has nothing to do with Jesus. Jesus was born in the fall of the year. Everything is about the merchant!!!!!
