They are an old agency, remember Al Capone, but now a days all they do is work with any crime having to do with firearms and explosives, usually a federal crime, unless the locals request their assistance( and in that department, they are experts). They do not do the alcohol and tobacco thing anymore, since its all legal. Unless of course there is a huge shipment of Cuban cigars entering the country and then the ATF will have to share their bust with U.S. Customs.

Most agencies are as good as the administration which runs it. The BATF has made head rows since the the 1990's
