I believe you're asking about the battle of Shiloh, and that was an early battle in the western theater of the civil war. I twas costly victory for the Union, and basically began Grant's path to greatness.

The Sides were the Confederate States of America, Which formed mostly for economic reasons, though the issue of slavery touched off the succession, And the Union, which was the United States Government's Army, and they were fighting to keep the country in one piece- preserving the Union.

I presume you are talking about the battle of Shiloh in the American Civil War. The Confederate States of America was fighting to form its own country, the United States of America was fighting to prevent them from doing so, more specifically the Confederate States Army of Missisippi launched an offensive to drive the Union army of West Tennesee from Western Tennesee, this was unsuccessful although on the first day the Confederates caught the Federals completly by suprise and almost destroyed them, but a lack of will and organazation to overcome a brave Union delaying action at the Hornets Nest led to the Federals being able to reorginize and launch a counter attack the next day and win the battle, Albert Sydney Johnson was killed on the first day, and PGT Beuregard took over with little knowledge of the situation. The battle significantly weakened the Confederate situation in that part of Tennesee and made it untenable.

Shiloh? Cutting river and rail communications was the major theme of Union strategy in the west. Not only this but several other battles in the area were really about control of the communications hub of Memphis. The more things change, the more they stay the same. He's a Memphis boy, but Fred Smith wasn't exactly stupid for choosing Memphis as the central hub for FedEx over a century later, was he?

The Confederate States were fighting to gain freedom from the oppressive Northern controlled Federal Government.
It was the "War of Northern Aggression".
Except for Dresden and against the Indians, it was the only time in history that our government committed War Crimes against a helpless people.
