It's a very real risk for some people, especially younger people. You need to make sure the medicine is properly adjusted for weight, sensitivies, etc., and always watch him. Some people say they gained weight on it, but I know of someone who was thin who lost lots of weight on it and wanted to commit suicide every other day despite otherwise being sunshiny and upbeat. Always bring up any changes or concerns to the doctor who gives your son the medicine. Science isn't perfect, and every body is different.

I stopped taking it after two days and I was only taking a half a day ,I could of never functioned at work on that... Find an alternative drug zoloft is not good!!

Zoloft and Luvox are predominantly prescribed for anxiety and ocd disorders, though they are sometimes prescribed for depression, too.

Here are two articles about the suicide risks:

I have been taking Luvox, very similar to Zoloft, for several years and felt only POSITIVE effects. However, I'm not a teenager with erratic hormones and heightened emotions. It might be worthwhile to consider a drug like Prozac or Paxil instead, though those drugs aren't without their side-effects, either.

I have read it somewhere that in younger people it can cause suicidal tendencies but I have yet to hear of cases where it has. I took it for my anxiety but it just made my anxiety worse. Talk to your doctor and see if there is any other meds out there that might be safer and better for your son. Thinking of your son's well-being is really important if it does or doesn't cause those tendencies.
And yes, zoloft is treatment for depression and anxiety. Read it here: http://www.zoloft.com/zoloft/zoloft.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=default_home

There is a risk of suicide with all anti-depressants. The reason is because when a person takes anti-depressants they start to feel better slowly and as they feel slightly better, they have the energy and clearer thought to complete suicide plans. This usually only refers to the first few weeks of taking the medication. After that, the risk of suicide is reduced unless the person becomes depressed again.

I was on it for a while, then I was switched to PaxilCR, and finally Paxeva. I suffered no noticable side effects from any of these anti-depressants.
