My poodle insists on sampling the cat's food when she (my cat) isn't around.

Cat food is very high in protein and more than a dogs system can handle. It causes the kidneys to over work to get rid of the excess... this will cause your dog to have kidney failure

Really stinky doggy farts!

Also, as has been mentioned, it's just not nutritionally made for dogs. If you're feeding your poodle dog food, and the cat food is a stolen snack, then it's not that big a deal. It's not a good habit to encourage, though. You don't want your kitty to get malnourished!

Try having a single counter or small table that the cat is allowed on for eating. Make it clear to the dog that it is not to steal from that spot (be careful if she's a standard poodle, they have pretty good reach). It's a good way to establish that you make the rules around the house, not the dog.

An occasional sampling won't do much harm, but routine eating of significent quantities is not healthy. Cat food is much higher in proteins and fats than dog food and can cause obesity and damage some internal organs on your dog.

Cat food smells SOO good to dogs that it will be pretty much impossible to train your dog to leave the tempting treat alone. And cats like to eat all day long, so it wouldn't be fair to the cat to limit its ability to eat naturally. Instead, you should make the cat food inaccessible to the dog by putting it on a higher shelf or by putting it behind a baby gate that the cat can go through or over.

If it's just a snack now and then, no problem. Just like giving a dog people food. Or a person eating junk food.

Cat food can't be your dog's main source of nutrition though. Cat food is formulated for cat's very specific food needs. Dogs have very different needs and need to eat food specifically developed for them. Cat food has things dogs don't need, and not enough of the things that they do need.

If they were both the same then it would be labelled pet food instead of cat food and dog food. They're made up of different things because a cat's needs are different to a dog's. I wouldn't be doing it long term...

From this article it doesn't sound like it will hurt the dog, as long as it isn't eating it on a regular basis and not too much.

I doubt it would be harmful to the poodle.
