I have a Philips Magnavox 36" that the picture turned gray with horizontal lines, then shut off. Now, if you turn the TV on, it shuts off automatically. Any thoughts on what is wrong? There was a lightning storm the day this happened.

Depending on the age of your tv,it could be dying of natural causes(old age)or if u have speakers (other hi-fi audio digi-box)it could be a magnetic interference?other than that your tv may be overheating and the thermal cut out fuse is cutting in(small glass fuse 1-2amp near the power circuit inside your tv)if however u have no eloctronic knowledge then i suggest u return the tv or initiate a engineer to come investigate.Under no circumstances investigate it yourself,1-risk of ELECTROCUTION 2-FIRE HAZARD!Switch your tv off now and do NOT turn it back on until you know for sure what the problem is? Turn it off from the power source.

You can try to call the repairman to fix this TV, I believe the protection is working, since its detect something wrong with your TV, from the first problem (gray with H line) this usually happen when the Resistor which located in the board that attached to the tube fries.

I'm sorry you had to learn this valuable, yet expensive lesson. If you are going to have something electronic, you need to have a surge protector for it. If your TV is older than 4 years, you are better off replacing it than trying to fix it. I wish I had better news for you, but the lightening fried your TV. It probably needs a new circuit board.

I still service Phillips sets for over 31 years...VERY likely it was damaged due to lightning, since most components in these newer sets are VERY static sensitive...even the static in our bodys can damage new parts when we install them!!,( let alone lightning!) It may or may not be worth fixing depending on what the damage is..with lightning, anything is possible...just get an estimate first. Thanks.

When this happened to me it was because the power switch was sticky, but considering you had a lightning storm that day, I'd say it fritzed your set.

I think it is gone. You can have someone fix it, but it will cost money. Might be better off getting another one, maybe get a warranty with the new one. Sorry.

The tv could have a defect...call the store you got it from and ask for technical assistance.
