Getting angry or shouting is what they want - to get a rise out of you. I have learned over the years to be very calm, look the person straight in the eye, smile and say, "I'm not arguing with you. I said my piece and now I'm done." Continue smiling, turn around and walk away. If they follow you or continue shouting at you, turn to them give them a very confused look, smile and say, "I'm sorry, I must have confused you. I said, I'm done." Then walk away and pay no more attention even if that means walking into another room and closing the door.

Nothing makes an antagonist feel dumber than to be unable to get you to rise to the occasion and then to be humiliated and ignored. It's always better when others can be around to wittiness this. They tend to laugh at the antagonist and make them feel even sillier. =)

Hmmm, my dad does something similar sometimes I wonder if he is just siding against me just for a heated argument but most of the time we agree. Thank goodness. I stay clam and think some people have different opinions, it's not going to change mine.

Try not to air out your grievances around that person...Obviously they are the type who thrives on conflict. If it is an in-law, parent, brother or sister, this can be difficult. If it's someone you live with, or see on a daily basis, make sure there is someone else around with a level head, and who is not biased, to mediate. If this is a close family member, you may want counseling.

First of all, in any debate/discussion/disagreement, always keep your calm and do not raise your voice. Allow the other person to say their peace. If they won't let you speak, just walk away. They have closed their mind and it won't matter what you say to them, they won't listen and you will not be able to sway them one way or the other.

I just say "banana" and walk away. They either just become stunned for a little bit, allowing for your escape, or they quickly stop you, at which point I change the subject to something else, like bananas.

It takes two to tango. Don't get caught up in it. Refuse to defend yourself. Don't let that person tell you how your day is going to be.

If you don't butt them out of the conversation, politely or not, then it will continue to happen.
