Matthew 5:3 -- "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." -- uses a definition of "poor" that prevailed in the early 17th century when the King James Version of the Bible was written. Unlike our day, in which "poor" means "lacking in money", four centuries ago its English-language meaning was closer to "humble".

So reading this as "Blessed are the humble in spirit," Jesus is referring to those like this being able to enter heaven because they are more open to the possibility they they are not the center of existence (e.g., they are not "proud in spirit"). People "poor in spirit" are in no way lacking anything; indeed, they are claiming that without spirit, without God, they cannot enter the kingdom of God.

(Keep in mind that the Gospel of Matthew was written for a primarily Jewish audience, one in which God's name was not used in polite company. "Kingdom of heaven" is the writer's way around that restriction.)

This is a scripture found in Matthew 5:3. To be poor in spirit is to realize that you need God all the time and that you cannot do anything with out the Lord. It also means that you live by gods grace and you dont get enough of his mercy and grace.

A good book to read on this matter is the BeHappy Attitudes by Robert Schuller, this talks alot on being poor in spirit.

The more poor in spirit one becomes, the more richer you become spiritually.

Why do people attach meaning to things? It says what it says - those that are poor in spirit are blessed. So, being that Im an atheist and possess no spirit, I am spiritually bankrupt - and thus I shall inherit the earth. Because religious people will kill each other off.

Cant you people read?

Blessed are the poor in spirit tells me that we must be meek and humble of heart and the treasure we seek should be those gifts of God such as the gifts of the spirit, not material goods as our true treasures. What matters is being humble, not proud and boastful, and giving thanks always for everything in our lives, while knowing our true treasure lies in heaven with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

It means the opposite of arrogance. They are willing to take a serious look at themselves, and recognize that all is not necessarily well. They humble themselves before God, and put their trust in Him. They don't go around judging everyone who they think is inferior to them, or doesn't believe hte right thing: they know if they are alright, it is purely by the grace of God. That is the kind of people we find in God's kingdom. Other kinds of people are fakes.

The poor in spirit are the ones who say in Church (or anywhere for that matter) "Have mercy on me Lord, for I am a sinner". They are the people that know the shape of their soul. Once you realize how you are you also realize how much you need Jesus -- then you start asking, knocking, seeking.
