Generally, if a tooth is sensitive to hot/cold, sweets and pressure, a root canal will be prescribed.
If it's only sensitive when you bite down, it could be the result of several different things. Sometimes teeth just act up a little, then they're fine. An x-ray at your dentist's office is the only way to tell for sure.

It could mean a lot of things... It could mean that you have a loose filling, a nerve exposed, a loose tooth, or that your tooth could just be extra sensitive for some reason or another.

If it continues, go to a dentist. Only your dentist can truly tell you what's going on in your mouth.
